{"id":322,"date":"2012-08-23T07:50:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T07:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labs.stefanschleifer.com\/codex\/?p=322"},"modified":"2013-03-22T10:14:08","modified_gmt":"2013-03-22T10:14:08","slug":"jan-van-hulst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=322","title":{"rendered":"Jan van Hulst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan van Hulst was a writer from Bruges who wrote some texts that ended up in both the <a title=\"Gruuthuse Manuscript\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=336\"><em>Gruuthuse manuscript<\/em> <\/a>and in the <a title=\"Geraardsbergen Manuscript\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=368\"><em>Geraardsbergen manuscript<\/em><\/a>. In the<em> Gruuthuse manuscript,<\/em> we find his name in an acrostic in two prayers and a poem, but there are some other texts that may be attributed to him as well. And\u00a0he may have been the founder of the first chamber of rhetoric in Bruges.<\/p>\n<p>Jan is frequently mentioned in archival documents from Bruges.\u00a0He was, for example, commissioned to organise\u00a0a play at Philip the Bold&#8217;s visit to the city of Bruges in 1393. And he is known to have organized polyphonic performances in churches.<\/p>\n<p>The text in the <em>Geraardsbergen manuscript<\/em> is a letter to his friend, the\u00a0priest and singer\u00a0<a title=\"Perceval vander Nocquerstocque\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=320\">Perceval vanden Nocquerstocque<\/a>.
