Most educated medieval people understood Latin, and some also understood other vernacular (<a title=\"Glossary\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?page_id=1147#vernacular\">?<\/a>) languages besides their own. The manuscripts they read sometimes reflect this.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"A Veritable Cornucopia\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=237\">BNF, fr. 837<\/a>, for example, is almost exclusively made up of French texts. However, it also contains some texts which are written in a mixture of French and Latin, such as the <a title=\"Genre in BNF fr. 837\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=247\">patrenostres and credos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the <a title=\"The Geraardsbergen Manuscript\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=368\"><em>Geraardsbergen Manuscript<\/em><\/a> is mostly made up of Dutch texts, but the collection of <a title=\"Genre: captions\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=753\">captions <\/a>includes both <a title=\"Confrontation with oneself\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=360\">Dutch<\/a> and <a title=\"A fowl Breath from London?\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=358\">Latin<\/a> ones, and the manuscript also contains a short French text, <a title=\"Taxonomy of crazy people\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=2120\">&#8216;Fol est qui fol boute&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our English manuscript, on the other hand, is <a title=\"Multilingualism\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=984\">a truly multilingual codex<\/a>, thanks to an English scribe who decided to supplement a French romance with a &#8216;missing episode&#8217; in English.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, both MS germ. qu. 719 and MS germ. qu. 2370 are monolingual. Indeed, <a title=\"Short Verse Narratives\" href=\"http:\/\/everycodextellsastory.eu\/?p=1997\">short verse narratives<\/a> tend to be transmitted in monolingual contexts in the German-speaking area (as opposed, for instance, to religious texts or chronicles).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While we group our manuscripts according to their most important language, that does not necessarily mean that they only contain texts in that language.
